  • Regular color TV broadcasts begin in the US.
  • TV ad revenue exceeds radio revenue in US for first time.
  • Robert Borkenstein patents breathalyzer.
  • Swanson introduced the first TV dinner.
  • The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) began manufacturing color television sets at its Bloomington , Ind. , plant. It built 5,000 sets with 12-inch screens, known as the model CT-100 color receiver. They sold for $1,000 each.
  • The first atomic submarine, the Nautilus (named from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) was launched by the U.S.
  • Ray Kroc first visit to the McDonalds brothers hamburger stand in San Bernardino Ca. Becomes their franchise agent.
  • The Butterball brand and the self-basting turkey introduced.
  • The word LEGO is officially registered & trademarked in Denmark.
  • First Church of Scientology was founded in Los Angeles.
  • The World Series broadcasted in color for the first time. NY Giants defeat Cleveland (4-0).
  • On the Air! There are 2,487 AM radio, 560 FM radio and 349 TV Stations. (TV has just doubled from 125 stations in 1953).
  • Baseball legend Hank Aaron begins his career by joining the Milwaukee Braves.
  • William Golding, publishes his tale of the dark side of human nature, The Lord of the Flies.
  • M&M's Peanut Chocolate Candies introduced. Also, the universally loved M&M's Brand Characters and the famous slogan, "The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hand," slogan debuted.
  • J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings published.
  • Elvis Presley makes his first record.
  • Of the 94 million phones in the world, 52 million of them are in the US.
  • Chain supermarkets now account for two fifths of the food sold retail.
  • Ellis Island , the immigration station in NY Harbor, is closed. Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island.
  • Trix cereal introduced by General Mills.
  • Bazooka Joe comics first introduced.
  • Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson Motor Car Co. merge to form the American Motors Co.(AMC).
  • The first successful kidney transplant is performed in the U.S. by Harvard physicians. The patient will survive for seven more years.
  • Dr. Roger Bannister of England becomes the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes on May 6. His time is 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds.
  • Hit songs include: "Three Coins in the Fountain", "Mister Sandman", Sh-Boom" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll".
  • International Business Machines (IBM) introduces the first mass-produced computer dubbed the IBM 650 by installing the first one in Boston . Over the next 8 years, 1,800 were produced.
  • Kraft introduces CRACKER BARREL® brand natural cheese.
  • First C-130 Hercules transport aircraft first flew in August 1954.
