What is a WiFi HotSpot?
A WiFi HotSpot is high-speed wireless Internet access available in convenient public locations. If you have a wireless compatible (Wi-Fi 802.11b) laptop or handheld, you can access the Internet at speeds up to 11 Mbps, which is significantly faster than dial-up.
Who can use Garwood Labs WiFi HotSpot?
Our Hotspot is for the use of our customers who are currently requesting, monitoring, or reviewing tests at our Pico Rivera facility.
What do I need to use Garwood Labs WiFi HotSpot?
A laptop or handheld with Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless capability. Some devices have this built-in. If not, you simply need a Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless networking card for your device, available for checkout from our receptionist. Also, a standard internet-ready browser on any operating system. No additional software is required.
If you desire use of a dial up modem, Ethernet line, or a computer with Internet access, they are available for customer use at Garwood.
How do I use Garwood Labs WiFi HotSpot?
Contact our receptionist and one of our computer technicians will set the SSID (network identifier) on your device so the HotSpot system can recognize it. (Some WLAN devices detect this automatically) The exact procedure is different for each device or networking card, so refer to its instructions. After setup, launch your Internet browser, and you'll have fast wireless access to the internet up to 768 KBps.
What can I access?
Any application you can access via the Internet. This includes the web, web-based email (eg Yahoo and Hotmail) and perhaps your company network (see below).
Can I access my corporate network?
You can seamlessly access your corporate network, including your company email and calendar, provided your employer has set up your device with your company's VPN client software (virtual private network) and the necessary security measures. Please contact your MIS or IT department to see if access is available.
How much does it cost?
There are no call charges for your wireless connection and the service is free to all Garwood Labs customers.
How secure is the connection?
A WiFi HotSpot is as secure as any other high-speed service, including DSL and cable. For added security, Garwood's Hotspot is placed behind a hardware firewall. However, we recommend you use whatever additional security measures you have available, including virtual private networks, encryption and personal firewalls, to ensure complete peace of mind.
Can I connect using a Macintosh?
Yes. Garwood Labs WiFi Hotspot supports Macintosh users with AirPort cards. Contact our computer technicians and review the AirPort instructions.
Can I connect using a handheld?
Yes. Garwood Labs HotSpot works with any handheld that supports the Wi-Fi 802.11b wireless technology and a standard internet-ready browser. At press time, only the Palm TungstenT C, Samsung Nexio S160 PDA, and the Toshiba Pocket PC e750 & e755 Series are WiFi compatible.
