About FCC testing

  • Radio frequency emissions in the United States inspected under the standards as described in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
  • The most common standard is FCC Part 15B, class A - commercial, industrial use or FCC Part 15B, Class B - home or office use.
  • Items intended for use over telephone lines are covered under FCC Part 68. Radio frequency devices (intentional radiators) are covered under FCC Part 15 and 95.
  • Enforcement of the FCC rules (and the E.U. Rules) are through audits in the commercial sector and complaints of emission interference. Penalties can include product re-call and significant monetary penalties.
  • FCC compliance testing of non-intentional and intentional radiators.
  • Section 15.247 - Testing under the provisions of this section is limited to frequency hopping, direct sequence, and digital modulation. The following test are performed under this section for wireless certification testing on products:
  1. Carrier Frequency Separation - 15.247 (a) (1)
  2. Number hopping frequencies - 15.247 (i)
  3. Time of Occupancy - 15.247 (a) (2)
  4. 20 dB Bandwidth - 15.247 (a) (2)
  5. 6 dB Bandwidth - 15.247 (a) (3)
  6. Peak Output Power - 15.247 (b)
  7. Spurious RF Conducted Emissions - 15.247 (c)
  8. Spurious Radiated Emissions - 15.247 (c)
  9. Power Spectral Density - 15.247 (d)

Intentional Radiator -A device that intentionally generates and emits radio frequency energy by radiation or induction
Unintentional Radiator -A device that intentionally generates radio frequency energy for use within the device, or to send radio frequency signals by conduction to associated equipment via connecting wire, but which is not intended to emit RF energy by radiation or induction

Shipping to the European Union (E.U.)

As of January 1996, I.T.E. product being shipped into the European Union (E.U.) were required to meet emissions and immunity requirements of the EMC Directive, (89-336-EEC). By January 1997, Product Safety was also required by the Low Voltage Directive, (73-23-EEC). Now EN61000-3 Series for Harmonics and Power Factor.

The test standards for these directives are:

EN 55022 (CISPR22)
EN 55024 Immunity
EN 60950 (IEC 950)

Professional Audio and Video Products:

EN 60065 Safety
EN 55103-1 Emissions
EN 55103-2 Immunity

The countries included in the European Union include Austria , Belgium , Denmark , Finland , France , Germany , Greece , Ireland , Italy , Luxembourg , Spain , Sweden , and the United Kingdom . The symbol showing compliance is the CE Mark. More and more countries are requiring compliance certification for all imported ITE equipment.
